List Unsubscribe by Domain

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but it doesn't hurt to ask. So before I flag this as a feature request: 

 

Is there a way to set up the list-unsubscribe header to opt people out by domain, or even better, by email address? 

 

We run several lines of business out of the same Marketo account. For example, we have our main domain for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons - plasticsurgery.org - and another domain for a regional society we manage, the Virginia Society of Plastic Surgeons - vasps.org. One person can be a member of both, so we don't have separate workspaces set up. 

 

If someone gets an email from vasps.org and decides to click the "This message is from a mailing list, unsubscribe?" button at the top if a Gmail or Apple Mail window, it will unsubscribe them from everything coming out of our Marketo account, even if they really only wanted to opt out of VASPS emails. 

 

I do have a followup email that goes out to tell people that they actually unsubscribed from everything, and of course we have our email preference center linked in the body of our emails, but it would be nice if when someone clicked that Unsubscribe button it would only unsub them from what they were trying to opt out of instead of everything.

You don’t really have the mind-reading ability that’s suggested here. Yes, some people may not mean to opt out of all your brands. But there will also be people who absolutely did mean that, and choosing the broader option is standard.

 

In any case, it is possible to transform the Unsubscribed via List-Unsubscribe action into separate brand-level options. You just need a trigger campaign to flip the main Unsubscribed field back and select one of the brand-specific fields instead. Those fields should be DateTimes set to {{system.datetime}} for auditability.

 

P.S. Opting out by From: address would be a particularly strange assumption. People aren’t trying to stop marketing emails from john@example.com but still get them from jill@example.com. You should be blocklisted instantly for thinking that. They may have certain topics or newsletters they want to unsubscribe from, but that’s what a Preference Center is for.

Yeah, that's basically what I thought. It's one of those things I knew but didn't know how I knew so I thought I would at least double check.
