Lead Owner Field not allowing me to input information

I am new to Marketo.  When entering a new lead, I would also like to assign the lead owner using the lead owner first name and lead owner last name fields.  Both of the lead owner fields are shaded out.  When I try to import a list, it shows these fields are system managed.  What is causing this?  How can the system possibly know who I want to assign to the lead as the lead owner?

Hi Christina,

Unfortunately, you aren't able to import these fields. A work around is to create a custom field and create Triggers that change owners (in the Flow step of a Smart Campaign) based on data value changes to that custom field. 

If you use Salesforce, you can also setup Auto Assignment rules in Flow.

If you are using SFDC, I would assume that 1. your Marketo license does not have the permission to "change" lead owner in SFDC or 2. if Marketo does have the permission, the "roles" may not be assigned correctly in SFDC.
