Integration Marketo into a Mobile/Web application

We're currently trying to build automated emails based on how far a user has completed a course. The course can be abandoned at anytime and is living on a different database then Marketo. What we're hoping to do is send email to those who have abandoned to re-engage them. In our email we want to personalize it based on where they last left off.

Has anyone built Marketo into a web/mobile application and if so, what did it take?

Please go to developers.marketo.com and use the API tools to create a hook from your product to your Marketo.
