In Marketo, is a lead also a contact?

In other words, when I'm creating a smart list that says "when a lead is created" will it also catch when a contact is created?  There is no option for contacts which is why I'm asking.

Assuming you're using SFDC, yes.  Everything is a "lead" in Marketo.  Makes for some interesting clarifications around nomenclature in our office.  (Depending on what exactly you are trying to do, you may want to additional filter / constraints for source = Salesforce or Marketo.)

Yes, Marketo refers to all people as leads.

If you are trying to segment based on Salesforce Lead vs. Contact, you can use the filed SFDC Type.

Awesome, thank you Richard!  I wanted to be sure the trigger type of "lead created" would also apply to contacts created.
