Implementing RTP Custom Variables

Our web developers are implementing custom variables so we can segment using web history. They currently have it on our dev site, but I was wondering if it's possible to test on a dev site if the dev site isn't one of the available domains (it does have the RTP code)?

It would be ideal if there was a way to view a log of the custom variables assigned to specific cookies (either known or anonymous) so we can check and see if the correct values are passing for the custom variables. Does anyone know of a way to make sure custom variables are passing correctly?
