Is it possible to insert an image into my landing page that links to a pdf? Or am I forced to list the URL for the pdf with no image?

Yes, this is possible. If you insert your image into your landing page, click on it, then select the 'Property Sheet' drop down (to the left of 'Insert Element'). You can add in a link URL to the property sheet.
