How to add custom entry types to the calendar without having a parent program?

I am currenlty struggling with the proper way to handle this.  We need to add the non-Marketo related marketing efforts to the calendar.  If anyone could provide insight into the below questions it would be great
  1. How can we add custom entry types to the calendar without having a parent program associated?
  2. If this is not possible, what is the best practice to create a fake parent program in order to be able to add custom entry types without having the program show up even though other program types/channels we do want to show up?
