Question

How do I pre-populate a form not on a Marketo landing page?

I am using the new Form Editor that is under Marketing Activities in Marketo (it seem to be more user friendly). I create a form, and I set the default value to be, for example, {{lead.First Name}}. I include that form on page that is not a Marketo landing page but it does have the Marketo tracking code since it is our own website.

Next I send an email though Marketo to someone in our database but when that person clicks on the link, the first name is not displayed. I see exactly what in put in:

Do I need to use the old form creator? Do I need to have the form on an officially recognized Marketo landing page?

Any insight is appreciated.

Patrick

Patrick, as far as I understand it, Forms 2.0 forms on non-Marketo pages were intentionally left without the pre-population feature you're describing. This was done as a security measure.

Hmmm..

and am I correct in understandingthat the old forms can only be displayed using Marketo Landing pages (i.e. we cannot put it on our own pages)?

Thanks for the fast response.

No you can absolutely deploy either 2.0 or 1.0 Marketo forms to your landing pages. Short answer: put a 1.0 form on a marketo landing page, approve it, view the source, and copy the form code you find there.

Here's a link to the canonical article about how to do that.

And with a 1.0 Form on a non-Marketo landing page I can pre-populate the form?

Technically speaking the answer then lies with jQuery/Javascript for applying values into fields, though that's not my skill set and I couldn't avise you specifically. If someone else in the community knows, then I'd defer to their experience on that.

Regarding your form, are you trying to fulfill user experience where returning visitors' details are displayed to them?

Exactly. If we send an email to someone we have in our database to fill in a form, I want to make it easy for them. Pre-fill seems to do that.

If you use a Forms 2.0 form, you can leverage the "Known Visitors" option, as seen here.

I think before you delve into getting values to pre-fill into form fields, you may want to see if Known Visitors would be sufficient for what you're trying to accomplish.
