When I create a custom object via the API how do I link that object to a lead?

The custom object should already exist in your CRM, no?

Marketo can only read these anyway...at least by default.

Unfortunately no. I need to create the custom object and link that custom object to a lead simultaneously via the API. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that before.
