How are industries classified in RTP?

I'm curious to know exactly how Marketo knows what industry a visitor to our website is.  What criteria is this based on?  I'm getting questioned by management of how it actually works within Marketo and can't seem to find any explanation, is it by reverse IP? What's the process for updating to newly found companies that fit into an industry? How often does it run?
