Global Footer Question

My company resides in the U.S., however, we are headquartered in Japan. Both regions currently share one Marketo instance. I just created my first email in Marketo and while everything looked fine in the Preview, when I sent a sample email to myself, there seems to be a global footer (in Japanese) that appeared.

Again, this footer is not in the Preview area of the email nor anywhere while I was creating it. Does our team in Japan need to remove it or is there a way for me to do so?

Thanks!

Check your Marketo Admin -> Email settings. There can be a global Unsubscribe configured there. That footer is automatically appended to all outbound emails, which is why you don’t see it in the email editor/email preview, but it appears in the actual sent email. If your Japan team configured this for compliance, it would apply to the whole instance. Usually, users use Segmentation + Snippet for modules like the footer, which likely has a regional version based on a person's country/location.

Some links you might find helpful from the product doc:

I hope this is helpful. Pls let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you! I don’t even see “Email” as an option under “Admin.”

You might not have the Access Admin > Access Email Admin permission assigned to your user's role. You might want to get that added to your Marketo user's role/have an Admin check Email settings for you. Pasting a snapshot with Email Setting highlighted in the Admin for your reference:

The footer - I suppose it’s a Snippet? - should be visible in the Email Preview. Could it be that it’s dynamic and pulled in for your record based on a Segmentation you’re in?

Go back to your preview, but preview your email with your person data:

That should display the Japanese footer. If so, check that footer and find out how its dynamization works.

And whether or not you can make changes here yourself or if you have to talk another team, depends on your user rights management in Marketo.

(What I’m saying here is under the assumption that you’re using Email Editor 2.0 of Marketo. If you’re talking about the *new* editor, everything might be different.)

EDIT: Ah, Darshil’s answer is probably much better than mine. Forgot about the global footer settings (which usually should be disabled in the setup phase of a Marketo instance and replaced with custom unsubscribe settings).

thanks - I did that and you’re right, I now see the Japanese footer at the bottom. How do I find out how its dynamization works? I’m very new to Marketo so apologies if this is a basic question!

Go to Edit Mode of your email and see the footer’s name. Then find the footer in “Design Studio”. Edit it, and see what it is segmented by (on the right hand side). Go to that Segmentation in “Database” and see its rules set. Then check your own record in the Marketo database and find why it fits into the Japanese segment (most likely the Segmentation is either “Country” or “Language”.). Then change your own person data to a country or language that makes you switch segments. Then preview again.
