False Positive Hard Bounce Email Invalid?

I've setup a Hard Bounce notification for event signups that goes to our sales team so they can check the email address where the confirmations and reminders are being sent.

In this one instance, we received the following Invalid Email Cause:

550-5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist. Please try 550-5.1.1 double-checking the recipient's email address for typos or 550-5.1.1 unnecessary spaces. Learn more at 550 5.1.1 http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?answer=6

However, the sales team is insisting that they spoke to this client and they did receive their emails.

Does anyone know how or why this could happen? I looked in the activity log and it shows no deliveries or opens to this persons email address.

Sales and now management are questioning the validity of our analytics if this could have happened.

This sounds like a question for support. I have had some goofy things happen with bounces too.
