Email Preference Strategy - Research organization/Non-profit

We are trying to revamp our email preferences, and want to benchmark amongst other research/non-profit type organizations to see how they align their preferences. 

Currently, we have preferences split up by the research product groups (financial management, supply chain management, etc.), but we are considering switching to email type (newsletter, events, surveys, research content). 

If you have any best practices, or examples to share, that would be appreciated. I'm also open to a quick 15-30 min call if that is easier to discuss!
