Email Performance Report Shows Fewer Clicks than Program Results

My Email Performance Report is only showing 2 total clicks (to my understanding 2 individual people Clicked on the email even if they clicked multiple times).

However, in the Results tab for this same campaign I can see more than 2 people clicked even going as far back as the first day that the reporting filter is looking at.  The fact that the Email Performance Report has any data indicates that this should not be an issue with delayed data, since at least data from the first date the report is pulling should be complete.

Yes, your understanding is correct. Email Performance shows not clicks, but rather people who clicked.

Just to dismiss a few usual suspects: Your reporting time frame is okay? Have you refreshed your report?

From your screenshots: Leslie, Brad, Rose and Valentin clicked? Is that all you see from the results tab? So four vs. two on your Email Performance report? If you click into the details of these clicks: Do they happen to be bot clicks?

  • No I see 10 different people Clicked based on the Results tab data from 7/9-7/13
  • Reporting timeframe is aligned in both the Email Performance Report and what I am looking at in Results
  • I have refreshed the report
  • I see nothing that indicates these are Bot clicks.  Is there anything specific I should look for in that regard?

If you have Admin - Email - Bot Activity enabled, you see this attribute of an email click. And that would be counted as a click in Smart Lists, but excluded in Email Performance Reports.

This would be the Smart List filter with the respective Constraint:

This is almost certainly Marketo's bot activity filtering, not a data delay issue.

Your Results tab (raw activity log) shows every click, including ones flagged as bot activity, but the Email Performance Report excludes anything tagged Bot Activity = True from its counts. So it's normal for the two to disagree.

A couple of things that support this in your data: in the Results tab, I can see the same person clicking multiple times within the same minute (e.g. 5-6 clicks back-to-back at 12:31-12:32 PM). That kind of rapid, same-second repetition is exactly what Marketo's "proximity pattern" bot detector is designed to catch, it flags 2+ activities happening within a second or two of each other as likely bot/scanner behavior (common with corporate mail security tools that pre-click every link before delivery).
