Editable Snippets Within Template

When working from an email template, if you add a snippet to it, is there a way to be able to edit the snippet once it's in place? I've found that sometimes the 'Edit' option is grayed out and sometimes it's not. When that option is available, I'm just not sure what I'm doing differently from the times that it's not available.

You should edit the snippet directly in Design Studio.

But won't that edit the snippet for every instance that it's used? If I just want to edit a word or two of a snippet for a specific email, is that possible?
