Is there a way to go in an approved email template and edit the HTML even though there have been drafts made in that existing template?

You can make edits to an email template. This will put all dependent emails on that template into "approved with draft" status.   As Josh said, if you move or change the DIVs, you could remove entire sections of content form approved emails.  Thing is, the new edited version would not go out untill you re approve  the draft email.

Hi Nio, not sure I understand... If an email template has been approved then you can go in and make additional changes, just make sure that you approve that template again (and all associated emails) if you want it to go live.

Yes to what Dory said.

Just be a bit careful because if you change the DIV editable areas, you will likely break the dependent emails. Do not approve any drafts until you verify the changes worked.

So does that mean I need to unapprove the template, make my edits then approve the template again? Would this affect the existing drafts that have gone out to my clients?
