Duplicate Leads - What Happens?

A new lead list was obtained from a tradeshow recently. If I upload this list and check remove duplicates, will the email addresses associated with the new list be updated with a new customer type (found in the new list) or will it remain the original lead's customer type? My new lead list will have a different customer type than the old lead list.

Hey Heather,

As long as the email address is the same, a new record will not be created. If you import other fields, the existing record will be updated to the new values unless you have blocked updates to those certain fields in the admin section.

It all depends on how you have things set up!

The customer type shouldn't change just from an import unless you have a column called Customer Type.

We have a column for Customer Type, Josh. How would I block updates to certain fields during import (just out of curiosity?) Thanks for your help Jeff and Josh!

Hi Heather, to block a field from import:
  1. Go to admin
  2. Select field management
  3. Click the filed you want to block updates from (i.e. Customer Type in this instance)
  4. Field Actions
  5. Block field updates
  6. Select the updates that you don't want the field to be updated from
  7. Apply
I hope that helps!
