Does an empty email activates the flag field email invalid?

Perhaps a dumb question, but I haven't found any clarification yet on the documentation. From what I understand Marketo can create records with empty emails but doesn't flag the leads as email invalid. 

Also, I understand that the email invalid field is changed by Marketo automatically when the email gets several hard bounced codes from ISPs.
