Question

Do Bounces Count as Opens?

I had a sales rep send out an email from SFDC and they received a "Mailer-Daemon" return message, but it marked the email as Opened. Do bounces count as Opens as well?

Thanks!

Well depends who you are reporting to! LOL!

Seriously though, Bounces are usually reported seperately, and not included in Opens.  That is just good practice. : )

I would be surprised if a bounce was recorded as an open, because if an email bounced, it means it didn't even reach the destination inbox; meanwhile, an open is recorded if the tracking pixel in the email template is loaded by the recipient server.  Just based on this I can't figure out how an email could simultaneously bounce, but also be opened, but maybe there's a technical loophole I don't know of..

An email can both bounce and open if the bounce represents a transient error or is even just a remark about delivery,  In fact any email system so broken as to send a DSN (Delivery Service Notification, a.k.a. "bounce") to the From: or Reply-To: -- that's the only way the sales rep would've gotten the DSN -- is also broken enough to deliver the message to the recip's inbox as well.
