Creating a new lead type

Hi - I'm new to Marketo, so please excuse if this is common knowledge

Historically my company has only captured one type of lead (customer leads). We're putting out a new program to capture affiliate leads and I'd like to create a new lead type so these affiliate leads don't get put in the same bucket as customer leads, and don't get sent to salesforce. Is this possible? Thanks!

Hi again Davin Fan,

Pay attention though, whatever the filters you set on sync routines, as proposed by Dan, if you sync Marketo programs with SFDC campaigns, all program members will get synch'ed to SFDC.

You may also create the field Dan is proposing in SFDC, and then use workflows or lead assignement rules in SFDC so that when the leads are created in SFDC, they are assigned to a separate lead queue that regular sales reps may not access to. In fact, in SFDC, you can really fine tune the access to this new type of leads so that they are almost invisible to anyone but you or are assigned to someone dedicated to handle them. On the longer term, this approach is probably the best one.

Hi Davin,

Yes it is very possible, but you tell us too little to be able to help you. What CRM are you using ? What is technically a "customer lead" in the CRM ?

Hi Greg - Thanks for jumping in

A Customer Lead is a lead that's filled out on our website and gets created in our internal database. That database is later synced with our instance of salesforce and created as a lead object. It's the only lead type we have

What I'm looking to do is to create a new lead type in Marketo for these affiliates and separate it from the population of customer leads. I'd also prefer if it wasn't synced in salesforce.

Hi David,

Marketo won't automatically sync leads to Salesforce, so as long as you're filtering out these affiliate leads from any campaign that would sync them over, then they'll remain in Marketo only.

As for creating a whole new lead type, that's not something that is currently possible.  What you would do instead is create a custom field of some kind, which would apply to all leads, and then filter the affiliate leads based on the value in that field.  A simple checkbox could be used, for instance.  Affiliates get marked true, and non-affiliates are left blank (or false).

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll follow your advice and create a new field type to filter out these new leads

Great insight, Greg.  Since we use MS Dynamics as our CRM platform, the campaign entity isn't available to us in CRM - only in SFDC.  So this is helpful.
