Community member validation with Marketo?

Has anybody integrated third-party-hosted community data with Marketo? 

We are working on a project to implement an online community for customers. We need this community to be restricted to customers only ... but we will not be able to do single sign on to other internal systems.

Currently, the plan is to collect a customer numbers during registration and call out to a web servive to authenticate. Is it possible to do this *within* Marketo? Or is that something that would require a SOAP API? The platform for the community that we are considering is Lithium.

Hi Victoria,

Lithium platform allows you restrict the community to custormers only. Is the registration form (the one that you'll be using to collect contact numbers) Marketo based Form or Lithium based form? Could you provide some detail to help me with more understanding?
