When using the token "first name" in emails, is there a way to have it be capitalized even if the person entered their name in lower case on form submit?

No way to force this...if you use Salesforce you could create a formula field to make sure the content of the First Name field is capitalized properly and use that as your token instead. Check out this thread for inspiration: https://success.salesforce.com/ideaview?id=08730000000BqhkAAC

As Jason stated, a formula field is the only way to do this at present. However, I want to add that Marketo does have some token formatting options on the roadmap, so it's a functionality gap they are aware of and will be addressing. I recently ran into this issue with date formatting, but had to use the formula field option. Worked like a charm.

I recommend two things:

1 - Submitting this an idea or voting up similar ideas

2 - Checking out our LaunchPoint partner solution called RingLead DataShield. You can use their solution to format (capitalize) all first names in your lead database.

+1 on RingLead Data Shield (and RingLead tools in general.) Totally forgot about that. Good add!
