Can we call associateLead for an anonymous lead? Munchkin JavaScript

Can we call associateLead for an anonymous lead? For example, we have an anonymous user going through our survey and we want to associate certain answers. It's only at the end of the survey that we get an email address and can convert into a known non-anonymous lead.
