Can I hide a field currently in use?

We are no longer using several fields that I would like to hide, but they were heavily used in the past.

For example one of the fields is used in 213 old programs, smartlists, etc. All current and future programs will not use that field.

Is there any way to get around going to all 213 "assets" and removing the use of that field? Can I do this in a batch? Thoughts?

You cannot. For a field to be hidden it must be removed from use entirely.
