Background Images Do Not Show in Outlook

I have designed many templates recently with a background image but have noticed that none of them will sohw in outlook but show up perfectly fine on mobile (both android and apple) devices. Does anyone else have this problem? Im using both basic and CSS scripting but still cannot get anything to work across all platforms.

What does the code look like? It's hard to help without seeing what you're doing. Here is a resource that has worked for many folks:

    Outlook's default is to suppress images until the recipient clicks on "Download Images." End-users can change this, but many do not.

    When images are suppressed, Outlook will instead display the file name or the image description you supply. I prefer to use the image description. For example, if I have an image of my company logo, I include image description = "CompanyName Logo" so that recipients see this. Likewise with newsletter nameplates, people photos, etc. I think the limit is 32 characters, but I'd have to double-check that. Shorter is always better

    Note: For customer and operational emails, you might try telling recipients how to change the download setting for pictures from your email address:

    Unblock picture downloads for all messages from a particular email address or domain

    1. In an open message that was sent from that email address or domain, right-click one of the blocked items.
    2. Click Add Sender to Safe Senders List or Add the Domain @domain to Safe Senders List.

    I understand  that, but this is not a suppression issue. It works on MacBooks using Outlook just fine, also it does not show up on some Android devices

    Hi Nathan,

    I'm not sure if i'm correct or incorrect, but our web developer who helped us code some of our templates in Marketo explained that background images will not show up in some versions of Outlook because Outlook for Windows uses MS word to render e-mails. Word doesn't explain some of the HTML "language" and therefore cannot display the background images when it renders them.

    Not sure if there's some type of code you can apply to the HTML to fix it - but from what he told me, it's not possible.

    Hello Nathan,

    The outlook desktop clients will never display your background image, period. But luckily, there's actually a hack with the use of Microsoft conditional tags/statements. These conditional statements are only meant to serve outlook desktop clients above 2002. These tags won't be even visible when you would try to inspect the backend code of your email template.
