Apply Suppression List to all Programs

Hi - I have a suppression list created in the lead database which is built to remove nonengagers and any other leads we don't want to be actively marketing to.

How can I add this to be included as a parameter of the default Blocked smartlist for all programs?

I know we can include this in the program members smartlist to remove these people, however everyone in our team would have to remember to do this for every email they send. How can I set this up so it is included by default?

Hi Kathryn,

You cannot. But waht you can do is to suspend them (set the "marketing suspended" field to true).

You can add them to the marketing suspended list or to the opt out list, either one will prevent them from receiving marketing communications from you

Hi Jamie,

To be precise, these is no such lists You can use the unsubscribe field or the marketing suspended field.

Also, per the regulation in most countries, marketers should not manipulate the unsubscribe field. It should be only the leads who would be entitled to modify the value of this field.

and there is also the blacklist field that can be used, BtW.

The way Marketo works is that it checks against the opt out LIST before each send.  The opt out LIST is a smartLIST which filters in all leads with an opt out value set to true.  But thanks

This may be of tangential interest: We've created a smartlist named something like "All Marketable". It excludes unsubscribes, bounces, etc. But it also excludes members of some programs/campaigns (people who downloaded some free utilities, for example) that we know we never want to market to. Then, every smartlist for an email blast includes the "All Marketable" as the first building block. That's the list of "safe" targets.

This has a couple of advantages: we never have to load up every email blast with lots of excludes; saves time and ensures consistency. Also, we immediately have an idea of the actual number of targets who will receive the email; helps with deliverability score.

(This is somewhat of a simplification. "All Marketable" is actually itself a smartlist that includes "All Marketable Leads" and "All Marketable Contacts" ... and more. All this gives us a set of modular smartlist building blocks for email blasts. Several other more obscure suppressions in there.)

We did something similar to what @Frank Elley is describing above, but with a segmentation instead of a Smart List. We include our "Marketable Segment is Marketable" on every single email program or Smart Campaign email send. It removed people who have unsubscribed, which Marketo does take care of by default so this is just a double check, but also anyone who has Email Invalid, Marketing Suspended, Black List, or anyone not in our target audience or that we are intentionally blocking for a period of time.
