Adobe Email Designer: Replacing Dark Mode Icons Causes Duplicate Images (Old + New) and Breaks 2:2 Module Layout

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone has come across this before.

We've built an email template using the new Adobe Email Designer with several 2:2 content modules (icon, headline and body copy). The template works perfectly in both light mode and dark mode as long as we don’t change the icons. We can create emails from the template and everything renders exactly as expected.

The issue starts when we replace the icons.

As soon as we update an icon (including using the Dark Mode image setting in the right-hand panel), dark mode starts behaving incorrectly. Instead of replacing the original icon, we see both the old and new icons rendered in dark mode, typically with one stacked directly above the other. In some cases the duplicate icon is also out of alignment with the headline and body copy, causing the layout of the 2:2 module to break.

What's even more concerning is that once this happens, reverting the icon change doesn't restore the template. The duplicate/new icon behaviour persists, even after attempting to undo the changes or restore the original icon. At that point the email is effectively unusable and has to be discarded and recreated from the template.

So far we've found that:

  • A brand new email created from the template works correctly in both light and dark mode.
  • The issue only appears after replacing the icons.
  • Once triggered, reverting the changes doesn't reliably return the email to its original state.
  • The behaviour appears to be destructive, meaning we have to abandon the email and start again.

Has anyone else experienced this with the new Email Designer? Is this a known issue with the dark mode image functionality or is there a recommended way to update icons without triggering this behaviour?
