Adding -*- to stored field value

Does anyone know what adding -*- to a stored value in a form field does? For example:

Display value: Unsubscribe

Stored value: -*-Unsubscribe

Thanks,

Sam

Maybe something they were using on the form side, but again not special.

Doesn’t have an inherent meaning. Where are you seeing this?

It was included in an older smart campaign for our email preference center. We have a custom field, Communication Preferences, and interestingly there is no "unsubscribed" value for it. However, on the preference center form, the stored value says,

-*-Unsubscribed.

I hadn't seen that before and wasn't sure if it was something similar to a token or a hack for linking to the unsubscribe field and wanted to confirm before I made any changes/updates.
