Hi all, 

I have a bit of an urgent ask.

 

We’re trying to track email opens and if a user does not open an email we want to add them to a suppression audience. When looking into this, it seems like the interaction type = open event gets triggered automatically even if an email is not opened. We’ve tested this with 5 different profiles and noticed the same behavior. 

 

Has anyone encountered this issue and what could be a potential way to resolve this.

This issue is likely a consequence of Apple's implementation of the Mail Privacy Protection (MPP) policy. Introduced with iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey, MPP fundamentally changes how email is processed on Apple devices. Specifically, when a user opens the Mail app, Apple's servers proactively download the content of the email, including all remote images and tracking pixels, regardless of whether the user actually views the email. This process occurs through a proxy service that masks the user's IP address and location.

The primary impact of this policy is the disruption of traditional email tracking metrics. Marketers and senders who rely on tracking pixels to determine open rates, geographic location, and device type will receive inaccurate data. Since Apple's service fetches the content, every email sent to an Apple Mail user appears as 'opened,' regardless of the user's actual behavior. Furthermore, the IP address recorded will be that of Apple's proxy server, not the recipient's, rendering location-based segmentation and analysis unreliable. Therefore, any observed anomaly or inaccuracy in email engagement data should be critically evaluated with Apple's Mail Privacy Protection policy as a potential root cause.
