The article you referenced is from the upgrade process, and this step is part of the maintenance tasks to ensure the repository is in good health before attempting an upgrade. 

You can also perform regular maintenance tasks, to ensure you deal with such issues as soon as they arise, such as consistency and traversal checks nightly. Details for 5.6.1 are here: http://cq-ops.tumblr.com/post/29627149909/recommended-sequence-of-cq-maintenance-operations
