What is the role of the Site Owner in AEM and how is the field used?

When creating a site based on a Blueprint, one can optionally assign a Site Owner. The field allows an existing user to be picked but there's little information in the documentation as to what this means exactly.

 

What are the responsibilities of a site owner? Will the user selected receive notifications when something happens to a site? Does it have to do with approvals? Are there any OOTB features that use the Site Owner field?

Select the user that will be responsible for this site.

Many organizations find it useful to have a site/ product owner who works to ensure that the vision of the project is met by the individual teams during implementations (content creation, new features implementation)

I don't see it (siteOwner) used anywhere (oob) to get any other functionality.
