What does is lead do?

I'm trying to learn about administering AEM, and I got to the point were I was just trying to create user and groups. May I know what does this checkbox does?

And if anyone know how to make a hierarchy, that would be great!

That's a left-over from the old MCM module (iirc introduced with CQ 5.5); It's never been of real use and can safely be ignored.

(and btw the classic UI dialogs you are using and going to be deprecated ... in 2019 I would prefer Touch :-))

While playing with groups, I found out that group contributor is the base group for all user and group to be able to access the authoring environment. now what is authoring environment? I'm assuming it's anywhere from AEM home page to where ever it can navigate. But contributor only has read capabilities.
