Customize Drag and Drop functionality

I'm looking to customize what happens when you drag and drop a item from the Content Finder onto a Component. It appears that the out of the box behavior is to replace the value configured in cq:dropTarget with the path of the item(s) being dropped. It would be nice to intercept and change this behavior. More specifically I'm trying to get some drag and drop functionality working with the Multi Field Panel from here: http://adobe-consulting-services.github.io/acs-aem-commons/features/widgets.html This stores all the value as JSON objects. I would like to be able to build a JSON entry based on the dropped items.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
