can't determine search item path

running 6.2

we have a carousel that won't render pages on publisher. The only clues in the log file are multiple warnings that read

"Can't determine search item path for <blah>"

with a reference like this to every page that is used to create the carousel (and other pages in navigation)

All pages and image assets have been published (and republished, just for good measure)

Can anyone guide me to where to start looking for this problem?

From your description sounds like content exist but search is broken. I will take the approach of reindexing.
