AEM 6.3 Upgrade Lift & Shift Approach Recommended ?

The best practice to follow when upgrading is to follow the AEM Upgrade docs.

Upgrading to AEM 6.3

There is a lot of information here. Can you describe what you mean by Lift & Shift approach.

In my point of view about Lift & Shift approach is as follows.

1. Taking Fresh AEM 6.3 Instance.

2. Build the package with required content & code paths from 6.1.

3. Then install that package in AEM 6.3 Instance.

Can you please suggest us whether it is a recommended approach or not? 

I see a couple of issue in this approach:

1. You won't be able to migrate versions of Page and Assets as Package manager doesn't packages versions as of now (maybe a Future enhancement )

2. Assume you are upgrading from 6.0 to 6.3, this approach would fail incase you were using LDAP as there were extra properties added in accordance to Apache Oak guidelines.

3. You'd argue that you can use crx2oak tool to do a side migration with all versions and everything but that is not a supported approach by Adobe.

My recommended approach would be :

- Perform an inplace upgrade following the Adobe official documentation

- Do a complete regression and sanity test cycle to make sure things work well

- Use crx2Oak tool for delta migration before the Final cutover

If your repository size is less,i think it's fine to go with Lift and Shift approach.
