Segment vs dimension differences

We have a classification on the tracking code that rolls up to different campaigns. This is not the marketing channel or last touch channel, etc.

Suppose I use the campaign rollup at look at a campaign, email, for example, and I look at entries, orders participation and revenue participation over the past 7 full days.

Then for the same timeframe, I create a segment where the campaign rollup = email and it’s a visit level segment. I also look at entries, orders participation, and revenue participation.

Why would the orders and revenue be different? Both are using participation metrics over the same timeframe. If a visit had an email entry and ordered, it should show in both cases.

We have two reports supplying two different values each week and I’m trying to a) explain where the difference comes from and b) determine which report is showing what we are asking of it.

My theory is the ‘visit’ level segment is pulling in orders where the visitor had an email entry within 30 days and it’s being included.

The two reports are evaluating the campaign in two different ways:

    • Campaign rollup report: Reports orders and revenue attributed to the Email campaign classification according to the tracking-code variable’s configured persistence, expiration, and attribution settings.
    • Visit-level segment: Includes visits where the campaign condition was met at some point during the visit. The orders and revenue participation metrics are then calculated for the activity included within those qualifying visits.

As a result, the two reports may produce different order and revenue values. A visit-level segment does not independently look back 30 days. However, a longer lookback effect can occur if the tracking-code variable persists beyond the original visit; for example, if it is configured to persist for 30 days or if the segment is using visitor-level logic rather than visit-level logic. There is also an important distinction between these two definitions:

    1. The campaign appeared somewhere during the visit.
    2. The campaign generated the visit entry and the visitor subsequently ordered.

If your requirement is specifically to measure orders and revenue from visits that entered through an Email campaign, the segment could explicitly require the Email campaign value on the entry hit or use an entry-based condition. A general visit-level condition may include a visit where Email appeared on any hit, even if it was not the original entry source.
