Enhancement for Combo Charts: Flexible Line & Bar Chart Combinations in Workspace

Currently in Adobe Analytics Analysis Workspace, combo charts provide limited flexibility when visualizing multiple metrics together. Users often need more control to better represent different types of data (e.g., trends vs. volumes) within a single visualization.

We propose enhancing combo chart functionality to allow customizable combinations such as:

  • 2 line metrics + 1 bar metric
  • 2 bar metrics + 1 line metric
  • Ability to freely assign chart types (line or bar) to each metric independently

Use Case:
In many reporting scenarios, analysts want to:

  • Show trend-based KPIs (e.g., conversion rate, CTR) as line charts
  • Display volume-based metrics (e.g., visits, revenue) as bar charts

Currently, the lack of flexibility limits effective storytelling and forces users to create separate visualizations or compromise on clarity.

Proposed Enhancement:

  • Enable per-metric chart type selection within combo charts
  • Allow dynamic switching between line and bar for each metric
  • Improve legend/UI controls to support mixed visualization configurations

Benefits:

  • Better data storytelling and visualization clarity
  • Reduced need for multiple charts, improving dashboard efficiency
  • Enhanced usability for business users and analysts

I really love the recommendations for the combo visualization. I was just thinking about some of these yesterday and am glad to see others feel the same.

An additional version that come to mind for me is:

  • Bar + Scatter/Dot

Use Case:

Sometimes, my analysis or shared dashboard is looking at a snapshot in time - not a trended value. In data visualization, a line metric implies that a value is trended. However, there is technically

A) Nothing preventing you from using the Combo for non-trended data, and

B) No combo alternative for fixed points in time or non-trended data

Additions to Your Proposed Enhancements:

  • Enable scatter within combo charts
  • Enable scatter sizing

Benefits:

  • Scatter plot visual allows for fixed points evaluation
  • Scatter better indicates a non-trended value
  • The size of scatter plot points are small and difficult to see. Enabling sizing options, even if just fixed to three sizes (Small, Medium, Large) would make it easier for users and analysts
