Why do ad hoc excel exports use text format for dates?

Try changing your Font and Locale under Tools >> Settings to English (International) and Calibri Light.

It worked for me

Thanks for the response. If dates can default to date format that would save a lot of time.

I agree with this as well.  It is a quite a pain to go into excel and then convert the text output to date format.
