I did. However nowhere in the article did it mention toreplace {server.name} in the services-config.xml file with yourservername/host/ip. Doing this fixed the problem.

Make sure you start FDS. You have to do it manually. UnderFlex Dataservices 2 choose 'Start Flex Data Integrated Server'.
