Workflow timeout not working

we are trying to implement timeout for a participant step. But it doesn't seem to be working. When i configure the timeout as immediate, we are able to see the timeout behavior , but when we select the actual time like  1 hr. It is not timing out after the specified time interval. Is there any other configuration that we have to do to achieve this?

AEM version that we use is AEM 6.0

Note: When we checked the work item created in the back end, we could see that the timeout in milliseconds is getting updated properly. But the actual date is updated to next year!!

Can you please mention the section that you are referring to in this url? We are able to set the timeout and see that the handler scenario  is working fine for immediate timeout. The only problem is that when we select a particular period say 1 hour to timeout, the handler is not getting called after an hour.
