Definable character limits for custom fields

  • Definable character limits for custom fields
    • What is it?
      • Add the capability to define a character limit for custom text fields.
    • Why do we need it?
      • We generate a number of reports that require concise descriptions/updates, and they’re often transferred into document based deliverables with limited space. Without a character limit, the length of an entry is impossible to enforce, as currently there is no parameter to prevent a user from adding as much text as they want into a field. Additionally, lack of limits hinders consistency because contributors are not given any tools to help them adhere to standards. Some users have resorted to copying text into a Word doc for a character count.
    • What is the risk if we don’t do it?
      • When users enter text data without constraints, the data are subject to time consuming upstream rewrites in order to meet space requirements and focus the message.

This goes both directions - allowing more than 2k for specific text fields as needed. We have lists of products in images, and sometimes the fields have more than one image listed, which can turn into a lot of characters. Giving admins more control over the true size of a text field (not just visually) allows better customization of to meet data needs.

Thank you!

Hi! checking to see if there is more information on this feature since other form builder changes are live. Will we see this in the 22.2 release?

Adding a use case - we have a "GL code" that's required for chargebacks on marketing materials.

It's one string of 4 sets of numeric code & 1 set of alphanumeric

Requestors often write "TBD" right now making extra work for PMs who have to track it down.

Thanks!
