Character Limit on Forms

Description - Be able to set a character limit in single line text field or paragraph text field.

Why is this feature important to you - We have certain assets that we can only have a certain number of characters when using the single line text field or paragraph text field option in the form. To be able to set the limit would be helpful. We currently use the instructions to let them know not to go over, but it's not always followed.

How would you like the feature to work - When the system admin is creating the form, they would be able to change the character limit if they need to for single line text field or paragraph text field. Otherwise it would default to the standard if no limit is needed.

Current Behaviour - There is no character limit on custom forms and having users follow the instructions is not always working.

  • Definable character limits for custom fields
    • What is it?
      • Add the capability to define a character limit for custom text fields.
    • Why do we need it?
      • We generate a number of reports that require concise descriptions/updates, and they’re often transferred into document based deliverables with limited space. Without a character limit, the length of an entry is impossible to enforce, as currently there is no parameter to prevent a user from adding as much text as they want into a field. Additionally, lack of limits hinders consistency because contributors are not given any tools to help them adhere to standards. Some users have resorted to copying text into a Word doc for a character count.
    • What is the risk if we don’t do it?
      • When users enter text data without constraints, the data are subject to time consuming upstream rewrites in order to meet space requirements and focus the message.

I would love to be able to build our copy templates as forms in WF and character limits is mandatory for the writers so they know what to write!

I would love this as a feature or some form of character counter field? Either of these would be super useful.

At our company we use fields that are related to unique ID numbers to identify providers. One of these fields is a Tax ID number for the provider. This number should only be 9 digits, but we are unable to limit the character to 9 digits. It would be great if we could set limits on a field to only allow a certain number of digits to avoid miskeyed information.

We have a similar situation to Paula in that we have the need to identify the exact character limit for a field on a custom form that is related to policy number. One thing though, they are not always let's say 9 characters, but they at the most should be 9 characters. So wondering if there is a need to define a minimum and maximum character amount in a field.

Further, if we need the ability to add multiple policy numbers, it would be ideal to be able to enter multiple policy numbers into a field but it's easier to export in a report. But for now, we're going to have to do a drop down asking how many policies they have, and then create logic to have that number of fields appear depending on how many they select.
