search Functionality

Hi, Can I suggest some improvements to the search functionality? Firstly it would be great if we could execute the search using enter (or return) rather than only clicking the magnifying glass. Secondly, please add filters and sortation to the results! This would make finding things so much easier as I get a few complaints about the classic search experience as it is, the beta version is a backwards step. Thanks, Max Nyirenda HomeServe

Totally agree @Max Nyirenda - we need to be able to filter the search results (once returned) by a number of different criteria, similar to how the current search works, which is really powerful. I see that the new Experience search lets you add a filter by typing /project etc before the search, but I have found that most of the time this doesn't work (either by pressing Enter or clicking on it...it just disappears). Even if it does work, it only lets you filter by this criteria alone. The lack of the Advanced Search is also a major concern....I use this all the time. It's very useful in cases where you need to use several filter criteria at once but don't need to create a report for future usage. The only workaround with the new Experience at the moment will be to create new reports every time you need to do an advanced search, which is crazy. I really don't understand why the search was 'dumbed down' so much? Yes, it might appear simpler, but if you're really using the system (rather than just quick testing) and have a lot of data, it makes it so much harder to find what you want. We'll be super unhappy if the search is not enhanced further. David Cornwell

Personally I would take a basic search as long as it worked reliably. We have missing search results ALL THE TIME in the current search. Inherited access fails to make something searchable a lot, and we have to routinely ask for system re-indexes. I know they are reworking the search engine to address this. It's possible that they are simplifying it to get back to reliability. Either way, I can't stress enough that search engine bells and whistles are NOT worth it if the results start to become unreliable (like the current state). Matt Marks Banner Engineering Corp.

My search feedback: 1) When I type in my search criteria and try to backspace to correct a typo, the entire text I entered is selected after the first backspace is completed. Pressing backspace a second time them deletes the entire text I entered. This is super frustrating. 2) We need the ability to apply the typical Workfront list controls (sort, filter, view, group). I see how 'view' might be tough across many different business objects, but there are plenty of common attributes that are useful to have displayed in the result set if we were able to traverse the object model (eg, Program, Portfolio, Owner, etc). 3) I would much rather see more results on screen then have a super-stylized, white-space friendly, 'modern' list. A complaint for both existing UI and the new UI. 4) Export. Please? Search would be so much more valuable to me if I could export the results. Not being able to do that has forced me to create dozens of reports to assist me in investigating issues. Reports that I use once or twice and could probably delete, but forget to. Then the next time I have a similar reporting need I probably create a new report, forgetting that I had one with 90% of the work done already. I'm forgetful. Search should help me with that ;) Rick MacDuffie Symetra Life Insurance Company

Great feedback Rick, particularly 3 & 4. Regarding 3 - I can see exactly 4 full results at 100% zoom in Workfront. Some data is stacked vertically (unnecessarily) causing each result to be very tall, with lots of horizontal white space. Compare that to a file search in windows, and I can see 16 results in a single screen using the "content" view which is similar to workfront. Switching to "details" view, I can see 39 items in a windows search... which is really useful. Regarding 4 - This would prevent me from making a ton of disposible "search reports" just to export the content. We find ourselves making toss reports all the time, so I love this idea. Hi @Matt Marks - the Advanced Search (which has been removed in the new Experience) actaually bypasses the search indexes and returns results when you can't see them in the normal search. You should give it a try in Production. Like you, we've had quite a lot of search index issues in the past (though not recently). David Cornwell

Hi @Rick MacDuffie - I agree with your various points, but make sure you try Advanced Search in the Production environment. It already lets you apply Views, Groupings AND Export the results. I use it all the time, hence why I am concerned that it is not available in the new Experience. David Cornwell

@David Cornwell that's the first I've heard that. Will definitely use that trick in the future until the new search engine launches. Thanks! Matt Marks Banner Engineering Corp.

Well look at that! All this time I incorrectly assumed that all of my searches were getting rendered in the advanced search feature set. Turns out advanced search is much different and more aligned with how I would want a search function to 'work'. Thanks for pointing that out @David Cornwell ! Workfront - yeah, advanced search is kind of cool. Don't get rid of it. ;) Rick MacDuffie Symetra Life Insurance Company

@David Cornwell I had never noticed that Advanced Search just hanging out at the bottom of the search window before. It already gave me better results on my first search. Thank you!! Sheri Whitten Gordon Food Service

Glad that helps.....really hope Workfront take this feedback onboard and retain Advanced Search in the new Experience. David Cornwell

Agree with much of the above!! execute the search using enter (or return) ability to apply filters/views/sorts keep advanced search functionality backspace a second time -> deletes the entire text entered=super frustrating Katherine Haven, PMP VP, Director, Business Technologies - PMO FCB

Hello, please excuse if already mentioned, but I could not find it. In one of the older versions - Attask times - I could set a default filter for the search respectively it saved the most frequently used. In 99 % of the cases my colleagues and I search for a /project. The functionality to type /project in to set the filter is a very good one but additionally it would be great to set a default filter.
