New Top Navigation Customization from Layout Templates

Hi everyone, I wanted to give you a heads up on the highly requested feature we've added to New Workfront Experience Layout Templates - Top Navigation customization. I'm happy to announce that the capabilities are already available on your production instances and now Workfront Administrators can not only define the main menu item or a custom dashboard users land on but also pin top navigation items that will always be visible for the users. We do recommend pinning the items that are super important to always be visible for users and be accessible within a single click - the examples, of course, vary per job role and Layout Templates usage, but some of the most common ones may include pinning: - Business KPI Dashboards on Executives Layout Templates - Projects and Teams for Project Managers - Resourcing and Reports for Resource managers Please feel free to share any feedback or questions here. Thanks, Gevorg Gevorg Kazaryan Product Manager

that's very nice. I like it. Do you plan to make any refinements to it? I had 3 tabs manually pinned already, and then when I added a test tab to the layout template, it just pushed the tab right in front of everything already there. At the moment, I'm trying to figure out what the preferred alternative would be (do I want this to happen, but if not, what do I want to have happen?). -skye

Thank you so much for the feedback, Skye! The reason for pushing your pins to the right is that pins that Workfront Administrator defines on Layout Template always take preference over end-user's ones and the end-users are unable to remove or re-order those. We are always looking into the ways to improve the experience and your feedback is crucial for that. Gevorg Kazaryan Product Manager

Gevorg - Thanks for releasing this functionality. 🙂 Is there a limit on the number of items that can be added to the new top-navigation? Just curious... Admin Kelly-Wehrmann SSFCU

Hi Gevorg, I'm creating the layout templates for my users and I find that I have 6 tabs pinned and only one show (the first one) while I'm setting this up. When I log in as the user, the tabs show up fine. But as admin, I can't really see until I click the hamburger menu to see what's in there. So now I've ran into the problem that I want to rearrange the pinned tabs - and I can't. I would have delete all the pinned tabs to start over again. Regards. Polly Co

Hi Polly, Thanks for reaching out! I'm happy to help. Let me rephrase to make sure that I understood you correctly. You, as a System Administrator, are creating a Layout Template and assigning it to yourself and a user from your company. Then you see only 1 pin applied to yourself, but when you log in as the user you see that applied just fine. Is my understanding correct that issue is that the Layout Template is applying differently to you and the user? Am I missing something? Thanks, Gevorg Gevorg Kazaryan Product Manager

In the classic layout templates, you could specify that you want the users to have their landing page be "Reporting", for example, and then have a handful of custom dashboards set as the tabs in the reporting area. I would have users on the same layout template who would want tab A first and some who would want tab B first and they were able to do that themselves using More > customize tabs. Will this same flexibility come to the new layout templates? Otherwise the number of layout templates we have is going to grow exponentially because each user wants a different dashboard to be the one they see when log in. Kirsten Heikkinen

Hi Kirsten, Thanks for the great question! Yes, that same flexibility exist in New Workfront Experience with much enhanced way of doing things. Let me walk you through the options: 1. Landing page customization - you know can specify either a main menu item, which have much more granularity than before or set a custom dashboard for the end-users to land on. 2. Top navigation customization - in New Workfront Experience you can customize what users see on their top navigation panel by again adding main menu items or custom dashboards. The important thing about these is that end-users don't have power over these, so that they cannot re-order or remove those. We recommend pinning the items that are absolutely critical for the users to always have available within single click. 3. Left panel customization - in NWE you have control over almost every left panel navigation in Workfront, you can show/hide native items or add custom dashboards - here the users can customize the items that WF administrator defines for them and select the order of their preference. (e.g. you can set the users to land on "Projects" page and add the dashboards on their left panel, then users can customize the order of the dashboards and land on the one they prefer) I hope this helps! Feel free to post any questions you have. Thanks, Gevorg Gevorg Kazaryan Product Manager

Hi @Gevorg Kazaryan , No, actually as a systems admin, I added let's say 5 tabs to the layout and I only see on my the first tab I've added. The rest of the tabs are hidden under the more ... icon. This is the systems admin view setting up the layout. So if I click on the more ... icon, I get a list of my other tabs. I can't move/reorder the tabs within the more tab. Polly Co
