Thanks for the reply. A follow-up question: would this require Target being implemented in the authenticated channel? Currently we don't have Target in there, but we do have the Experience Cloud ID Service and Analytics of course.
I have since found a solution for this. It was because the segment was based on a success event that had visibility set to "builders". When I switched it to "visible everywhere" the error disappeared. But I agree it looks like a bug, so I've submitted it to Customer Care.

Is there then any other way to set up a simple numeric value to use in analysis workspace? It seems odd that the old function is deprecated when the new function doesn't work yet (numeric 2 is in beta, and doesn't work in workspace).
I have marked the original answer by joshd as correct, but the discussion has been really helpful, so thanks for that. Looks like I'll have to come up with a better way, given the downsides that have been pointed out about using VISTA rules.
