Can you use Commerce feature without a PIM? - Adobe Experience Cloud

Hello again - I'm about 20 minutes into the video for Best Practices for AEM and Assets and it's very development focused (and for 6.2). The common pitfalls part was helpful, however I'm concerned there isn't going to be recommendations on how to set up the Assets folder structure in order to best utilize translated language assets, content fragments and experience fragments.
