BUT I do think that your eVar's expiration is a factor in your report.Recall that Marketing Channels are processed with every hit. And a visit consists of many hits. In AA, a visit will not change if the tracking code changes. So what your report could be showing is that for some visits, users' Marketing Channels are being changed after some hits, e.g. to "Direct". But their hits are still coming in close enough that...

My understanding is that ECID can't be set "externally". It is set purely from callbacks with Adobe's own API calls.

You can pull two dimensions in a single API request using break-down only. If using segments addresses your query, I would suggest using inline segment as below:"globalFilters": [{"type": "segment","segmentDefinition": {"container": {"func": "container","context": "hits","pred": {"func": "streq","str": "1234","val": {"func": "attr","name": "variables/evar1"}}} This way you do not need to create and delete segments.
