How do I change an existing box in a pdf into a text box but keep the watermark in the background of the box so that the formfiller can place an "X", or better yet, how do I give the formfiller the option to place an X over the watermark in the box?

It's not clear what you're trying to do...

• What do you mean by watermark...is it an image?
• What is the box?  Is it a checkbox?  Why do you want to change it into a text box?
• Maybe if you explain the business requirements it will make more sense.

One thing you can do:

• Add your watermark to the form
• Place a checkbox over the top of the watermark
• Set the appearance of the checkbox to "None" (this will hide the border around the checkbox and allow the watermark to show through)
• Set the check style of the checkbox to "Cross" (this will make the checkbox display an 'x' when you click on it)
