Snipping Tool Disabling

Avatar

So we just installed LC Rights Management and as I was testing the protection options on my .pdf files and I had my ITS team test out the protection and within 10 minutes they came back to me saying they screen captured images by using the Snipping Tool in Vista and Windows 7. Is there any way or any updates to disabling this feature?

Thanks.

Rights Management can prevent the native Windows (I have not tried Vista, but XP and Server) screen shot capability (Ctrl + Alt + Print Screen), but it does not prevent third party screen capture software, such as SnagIt or as you have found Snippet.

The Dynamic watermark (display User Name or User ID) feature can be used to deter screen captures.  Also, even if screen capture could be completely prevented, people could still use a digital camera to take a picture of the screen.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

On this specific file, I have chosen to not allow 3rd party plug-ins available only adobe approved plug-ins. My quandry is that I am under the impression that snipping tool is now a part of the windows platform, much like, print screen (ctrl +alt+print screen). So is there any way to disable this option yet? I know print screen does not work on the protected file but it appears that snipping tool has replaced print screen functions.

(also, for what it's worth, I have disabled all 3rd party plug in's)

I just ran a quick test using a Vista machine.  It appears that "ctrl + alt + print screen" is blocked by RM on Vista, but the "Snipping" tool that ships as part of Vista is not blocked.  It would appear that the native Snipping tool works the same way as SnagIt or other third party screen capture utilities and cannot be blocked by RM.

Exactly Steve. I am wondering if there is a way to disable this feature since it is part windows platform now.

There is no way that I am aware of to prevent screen captures using the Snipping tool.  Again, I would suggest you use the Dynamic watermark feature of Rights Management to display the authenticted user's name or ID to discourage them from taking and distributing screen captures.  You will also want to frisk these users for digital cameras

Hi Steve,

Is there any documentation about screen shots (Alt+Ctrl+PrintScreen) of rights management enabled documents? I couldn't find any even in partnerportal of Abode.

Thanks
