Is there a way to add color to the reponses in a drop-down menu?

For example, we have setup a Project Management Dashboard and many of the drop-downs are status updates.  When the select green we would like the entire box to be highlighted green with the text Green and so forth for visual recognition.  Is this possible?  And if so, how is it done?

I have updated an example that changes the appearance of the dropdown based on the user's selection:

Note that the colours are expressed in the Red, Green, Blue colour space.
